This OCR PDF tool turns a scanned or image-based PDF into a searchable PDF by adding an invisible text layer on top of each page. That means you can Ctrl+F search, select text, and copy content—while the document keeps its original look.

How to use OCR PDF

Choose your PDF (scanned documents work best).
If the file is locked, enter the password (otherwise leave it blank).
Optional: set Pages (example: 1-3,5) to OCR only part of the document.
Select the Language that matches your document (or a combo like eng+spa).
Click Start OCR and then Download searchable PDF.

Digital PDFs vs scanned PDFs (important)

Not every PDF needs OCR:

Digital PDF: the text is already selectable. OCR usually isn’t necessary.
Scanned PDF: each page is basically an image. OCR PDF is the right solution.

If you can already select text in the original file, you can still run OCR, but you’ll rarely gain anything (and the file may become larger).

Quality modes explained (Fast vs Balanced vs High accuracy)

Fast: quickest option for clean scans and large PDFs. Best for speed.
Balanced: recommended for most documents. Good accuracy without being too slow.
High accuracy: best for low-quality scans, small fonts, or photos—but it can take longer.

Overlay mode: Lines vs Words

Overlay controls how the invisible text layer is placed:

Lines: faster and usually enough for search and copy.
Words: more precise positioning (better for selection), but slower.

Keep colors or why your output may look black & white

If your OCR output looks black & white compared to the original, it’s usually because the tool used a raster workflow to improve recognition. For most users this is totally fine, because the main goal is searchable text.

Keep original colors: leave Force raster output turned OFF.
Improve OCR on difficult scans: turn Force raster output ON (the result may look black & white because pages are rebuilt as images).
Either way: the goal is a searchable PDF (Ctrl+F / copy text).

When NOT to use OCR PDF

If the PDF already has selectable text and your only goal is to copy/search.
If you need a certified/legal OCR workflow (some compliance scenarios need specialized tools).
If you need editable layout (OCR gives searchable text, not perfect Word-like formatting).

Common issues and quick fixes

1) “Password required” or the PDF won’t load

If the PDF is locked, enter the correct password and try again.
If you don’t know the password, use our Unlock PDF tool first (if applicable).

2) OCR is slow or the browser feels heavy

Try Fast mode, or OCR only a page range (example: 1-10).
Close other heavy tabs and avoid low-power mode on mobile.
Very large scans can take time—this is normal for local OCR.

3) Output text has mistakes (wrong letters/accents)

Pick the correct language (or multi-language if the PDF mixes languages).
Use High accuracy for small fonts and noisy scans.
If the scan is blurry, improve the scan quality if possible (higher DPI).

4) File size increased

OCR can increase size, especially if raster mode is used.
After OCR, run Compress PDF to reduce the final file size.
